APPES scientific meetings are held 2nd yearly. The first
meeting was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in July 1999 in association
with the Malaysian Endocrine Society. Three hundred and thirty registrants
participated. Plenary speakers included Professors Francis Glorieux,
John Parks and Martin Savage.
The 2nd meeting was held in Cairns, Australia in November,
2002 with registration of 260. The plenary speakers included Professors
Annette Gruters, Francis de Zegher, Martin Ritzen and Martin Silink.
The 3rd Scientific Meeting was held in Kobe, Japan, in September 2004 in conjunction with the Japanese Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (JSPE). The program included a joint day with JSPE. There were 306 participants for the APPES meeting with a superb scientific program. Plenary speakers included Pofessors Zvi Laron, Martin Silink, Wolfgang Sippel, Peter Clayton, Nelly Mauras and
Takashi Kadowaki.
Education programs for fellows are organised on an annual basis
either in association with the biannual scientific meeting or as
independent meetings. The programs include a mixture of interactive
and didactic teaching in informal settings. Approximately 35 fellows
and 8 faculty have participated at each meeting. APPES has been
fortunate to receive educational grants from sponsors for the meetings.
The following meetings have been held;
| July 1999 |
Fellows Workshop, Genting Highlands,
Malaysia |
| May 2000 |
Molecular Biology Workshop, Hong Kong, China
in association with University of Hong Kong Molecular |
| April 2001 |
Endocrine Trainees Meeting, Shanghai, China |
| November 2002 |
Fellows Workshop, Palm Cove, Australia |
| October 2003 |
Paediatric Endocrine Update, Seoul, Korea in
association with Serono Symposia International |
| September 2004 |
Fellows Workshop, Awaji Island, Japan |
Opportunities for travel are often limited for young trainees and
scientists within the Asia Pacific region. Generous educational
grants from sponsors have allowed APPES to award approximately 30
travel scholarships for the annual scientific meetings. In 2001,
the joint meeting of the Lawson Wilkins Paediatric Endocrine Society
and European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology was held in Montreal,
Canada. Travel scholarships enabled thirteen trainees from Australia,
Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, New Zealand and the Philippines to participate
in this exciting meeting. Fifteen travel scholarships were generously
provided for the Paediatric Endocrinology Update in Korea.
Four individuals have received scholarships that have enabled them
to visit centres of excellence in other countries for short time
periods. The recipients from Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the
Philippines have visited centres in USA, Australia and France. This
opportunity and experiences gained have been invaluable for further
development of paediatric endocrinology in their local centres.
APPES has been fortunate in establishing
strong relationships with sponsors who have generously supported
our educational objectives. APPES acknowledges with gratitude the
direct and in-kind contributions of Novo, Pharmacia, Eli Lilly,
Serono, Serono Symposia International and Ferring who have been
the major sponsors of our meetings and travel scholarships.
